It was a dark and stormy night at the First Unorthodox
Saints Baptist Church
of the Proudly
and Humbly Reformed. It
was cold, dreary and John was getting ready to lock up after the most
successful yard sales in the church's history. It was money that was
badly needed by the orphanage and by John for some projects was wanting
to do. John sent all he volunteers home and locked up and went home too.
The next day the head of the finance
committee ran into the church office and announced that the money from
the sale was missing! The secretary said that John was the last one to
be seen near the money. Calls were being made to try to find out where
John was. He was not at home. This did not look good.
Suddenly the door opened and in walked
Pastor Noel. The finance chairman said, "Pastor, the money from the
sale is missing....John was..." Before he could finish the pastor
said "Yes I know, it was John." The secretary exclaimed,
"So we were right, John stole the money!" The pastor said,
"I did not say John stole the money." The pastor went on to
explain. "As John was locking up last night, I was driving by the
church and noticed that the window to the back door had been broken. I
let John know about this. We decided that instead of leaving the money
in the lockup box in the church that it would be better to make a night
deposit at the bank." Everyone was relieved to know that the money
was safe and that John did not steal the money.
Delegate # 2 was right. However,
everyone of these interpretations could be right depending on the
context in which it was spoken. It takes finding out the context to get
to the true meaning of a statement. The same thing is true about the Bible.
The Bible can be made to say almost
anything. All you need to do is take a few parts and pieces and put them
together and make up some meanings for some of the key words and there
you have it! A 100% genuine heresy! Can you imagine what would happen if
a mechanic followed a service manual like some people follow the Bible?
How many cars would there be sitting along the highway never to run
again?
Some Christians seem to treat the Bible
like they are Christian Wizards and the Bible is their Spell
Book. The Bible is not a book of spells. It is not a way
to control God like he is a genie in a lamp. The Bible means what it says and says what it means.
It is up to us to obey God and to seek the truth of His Word.
