Sunday School Leadership

Lesson Objectives:

This is not a lesson in the strictest sense of the word it is more of an example for you to use as a guide to develop your own set of leadership standards. This section starts out with the leadership of the Sunday School as the focus. It has been said that an organization can rise no higher than it's leadership. This is essentially true. I do not necessarily hold with insisting that teachers be "required to sign letters of commitment", but I do believe that you need to set forth the standards as to what you expect from your leaders. The following was given to me by my friend Fred Boone, who is serving as Minister of Education at Flint River Baptist Church in Hazel Green Alabama. I believe this will serve as an excellent example for any church in developing these type of guidelines.

Purpose Statements for Sunday School Leaders

Believing that the privilege of guiding people in the Christian way of life is worthy of my best, I purpose to as a leader in the Sunday School in my church to . . . . . .
  1. Be regular and punctual in attendance; and in case of unavoidable absence, give notice thereof as far in advance as possible. (1 Corinthians 4:2)

  2. Always have someone in my class in an accountability group. (Proverbs 27:17)

  3. Lead my class to follow up on every new convert in the class with the visitation ministry (1 Thessalonians 3:2)

  4. Be prepared through diligent study and prayer to teach the Word to my class each week. (2 Timothy 2:15)

  5. Lead my class to understand, love and to look to the Bible for all areas of life. (Psalm 119:16)

  6. Contribute my tithe to my Church's local operating budget and prayerfully participate in the global operating budget and the building fund. (Malachi 3:10)

  7. Attend the regular planning meetings. (Luke 14:28)

  8. Lead my class to visit prospects frequently and make a special effort to contact absentees through church wide visitation and throughout the week. (Acts 2:46)

  9. Participate in further training activities for leadership provided by my church. (Proverbs 15:28a)

  10. Lead and participate in the outreach and fellowship activities of my class and my department. (1 Corinthians 3:9)

  11. Be an example and challenge my class by faithfulness to worship services and regular activities. (Hebrews 10:24-25

  12. Lead my class to make winning the lost a top priority by faithfully sharing the Gospel with the lost. (Proverbs 11:30)

  13. Be an example and lead my class to use their spiritual gifts to meet one another's needs and to seek out areas of service and ministry as God leads and empowers them. (Galatians 6:2)

  14. Pray regularly for the church, the Sunday School, the officers and teachers, the pastor, and for the pupils the homes which they come from. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

  15. Not to give even the appearance of evil, particularly by abstaining from alcoholic beverages and tobacco products and other like activities that our culture views as a bad witness for Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:22)

  16. Pray and work to have at least one person out of my class to enroll and complete the Leadership Training course this Sunday School year. (2 Timothy 2:2)
